GALLERY
“You can’t always meet the artists, but you get a good look at ‘em at the Appalachian Arts Craft Center ... in Norris. Sitting among the Appalachian folk arts and other fine crafts offered at the cooperative gallery are ... snapshots of the craft artists. Their smiling faces add to the friendly, casual atmosphere at this unpretentious gallery,” wrote Doug Mason of the Knoxville News Sentinel. You’ll also get to meet one of the artists each time you visit, since an artist will always be there working the desk. Currently the gallery contains more than 60 selling artists.Traditional crafts are still produced, but the center doesn’t limit itself to hand-carved spoons and hand-loomed hearthrugs. The locally produced work includes oil painting, photography and Japanese origami. pottery, weaving, quilts, cards, baskets, woodcarving, stained glass, jewelry, wearable art, quilling, homemade soaps, toys, and more. There is something in every price range. Customers come not only from East Tennessee, but actually from all over the world. The members of the Appalachian Arts Craft Center include midlevel craftspersons as well as accomplished artists. The shop encourages emerging talent, but has a jury process for membership to assure quality of crafts. Many of the artists also belong to the Southern Highlands Craft Guild, the Foothills Craft Guild, and the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists. To become a selling member of Appalachian Arts, call (865) 494-9854 for jury dates and added information.
